  • What is Physical Therapy

Physical therapists are licensed health care professionals who evaluate and treat people with health problems resulting from injury or disease. They measure many different aspects of human function including muscle strength, joint range of motion, endurance and balance. They assess where the deficits are causing pain or decreased function. Along with these findings and in conjunction with the doctor's prescription, physical therapists formulate a treatment plan to promote the patient's well being.

Physical therapists are professional health care providers who are licensed by the state in which they practice. Many physical therapists specialize in treating specific areas of the body such as the back, neck, hand, or shoulder, or they may concentrate their practice on pre- and post-surgical care, sports injuries, stroke rehabilitation, or one of many other areas of physical therapy. Physical therapists may also be certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties in seven specialty areas of physical therapy: orthopedics, sports, geriatrics, pediatrics, cardiopulmonary, neurology, and clinical electrophysiology.

Patients at Peak Performance receive customized therapy programs to meet their particular needs. Therapists work closely with patients and physicians to develop effective rehabilitation programs. Included in this program are:

    1. Perform a full musculoskeletal evaluation, identifying the biomechanically dysfunction contributing to symptoms.
    2. Correct/normalize the dysfunction via a variety of manual techniques, which allow biomechanically sound progression into a functional muscle reeducation program.
    3. Progress each patient into an individually designed rehabilitation program.
    4. Provide each patient with an individual home program

In North Carolina, physical therapy treatment may be initiated by a licensed physical therapist when the patient is referred by a qualified, licensed practitioner. Qualified practitioners include physicians and physician assistants, advanced nurse practitioners, dentists, chiropractors, and podiatrists. Therapy is also available when directly initiated by a patient although the majority of insurance carriers require a written prescription from the referring or primary care practitioner in order to receive insurance coverage.

At Peak Performance, our physical therapists establish a close working relationship with each patient in order to enhance the healing process. Throughout the therapy program, our patients are seen by the same therapist who will review progress at each appointment and adjust treatment and home programs. When necessary, the physical therapist may call the doctor to communicate the patient's condition or discuss other available treatment options.

All the physical therapists at Peak Performance are licensed by the state of North Carolina and qualified to treat orthopedic dysfunction and pain. Orthopedic problems include those of the joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments throughout the body.

    Aquatic Exercise & Therapy

Peak Performance provides Aquatic Exercise programs in coordination with general therapy programs or on a stand-alone basis. Aquatic exercise is an excellent option for anyone wishing to get into shape gently and safely. In addition, aquatic exercise is an effective method of easing the pain and stiffness of arthritis by exercising in a warm water pool.

Many physicians recommend water exercise for people with arthritis. Arthritis Aquatics is excellent for maintaining joint range of motion, enabling people to continue with their daily activities with less pain or restriction of movement. The buoyancy of the water reduces the stress on joints while its resistance helps build muscles.

Aquatic therapy is conducted at Courts Plus located at 2911 Brunswick Ave., New Bern, NC. Courts Plus is located on Brunswick Avenue, a short distance from the Glen Burnie, Nuese Blvd. Intersection.

    Lymphedema Therapy Program

Lymphedema is the chronic swelling of an extremity or part of the body caused by a deficiency in the flow of lymph fluid from the affected area. Causes of lymphedema result from surgical removal of lymph nodes (i.e. mastectomy or prostate surgery), congenital defect or destruction of extensive lymphatic pathways due to trauma, surgery or radiation.

Lymphedema can develop at any time, months or years, after surgery, injury and/or radiation. Often it is triggered by a new injury or trauma to the extremity. Injury, infections, rashes, inflamed muscles all cause the body to send extra healing fluid to the area. The extra fluid overloads the system, causing a slowing in the movement of lymph fluid. As the lymph fluid and tissue waste products collect, the extremity swells and hardens. Bacteria in the fluids can multiply and infection can spread rapidly.

Persons with mild to severe lymphedema need formal treatment provided by an occupational or physical therapist trained in lymphedema treatment.
